In Kansas City, Missouri, a computer helps fire-fighters. The computer keeps information about every one of the 350,000 street addresses in the city. When fire-fighters answer a call, the computer will give them important information about the burning building:its position, size and so on.In fact, the computer system has a lot of helping fire-fighters with the problems facing them. For example, it can give medical information about invalids living in a burning building. With this information, the fire-fighters can take special care to find these sick persons and save them.
The Kansas City computer system also keeps a medical record of each of the city’s 900 fire-fighters. This kind of information is especially useful when a fire-fighter is injured. With this medical information, doctors at the hospital can treat the injured fire-fighters more quickly and easily.

Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents to do well in school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study hard so that they can have a wonderful life.Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students,it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.
Unfortunately,a number of students killed themselves.Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some do bad things with trouble-makers and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in exams and have disappointed their parents.Such students feel that they are less important and leave school before they have finished their study.
It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers’ work to help their children. To make matters worse,a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams. They do not try to educate students in any real sense of the real world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior or high school population attend these schools.
Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags.Child psychologists now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.

B.feel no pressure
C.a(chǎn)re trained to pass exams
D.can learn a lot of useful things

Since arriving in Toronto years ago, many friends told me to go and visit the Toronto Islands because it’s the thing to do during the long hot summer days in the city.Yet for some strange reasons,I’ve never made it over there. But when I created my list of things to do in Toronto last month,it was one of the first things to come to mind. Now I’m very pleased to say that I finally knocked that one off the list because this past weekend,we went to the islands.
We decided to check out Centre Island and took the ferry, which is located behind the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel and easily accessible from the TTC (Union Station to Harbour front streetcar).
When we arrived on Saturday morning,we joined the crowd to catch a ferry to the island.Honestly, when I first saw the number of people in the dock line-up,it almost turned us all around in defeat. But I decided to wait, and was pleasantly surprised how fast the line moved (Time Saver:take cash for the ferry, for most lines were cash only —trip cost us 16 dollars:adult:6.50/child 2—14 yrs:3.00).
Boats leave approximately every half-hour between 8 a.m.and midnight, and we took the Centre Island ferry.Once we arrived,we walked off into the huge park without knowing what to do next. But I was pleasantly surprised to see there were lots of things to do for all ages and budgets.
Free maps were for the taking and there were a few tourist information kiosks (信息站) right off the docks.Based on the map we decided to head to the south side of the island towards the beaches that line the shoreline and then spend the day walking our way back. The first place we passed on our walk was the Centreville Amusement Park.I wish I had brought the camera to take pictures of Gigi when she spotted the ferry wheel next to the swan boat rides. Both things made her go wide-eyed.This was definitely on our list of things to check out.
64.Which lies behind the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel?
A.Centre Island B.The ferry
C.TTC D.Toronto Islands
65.When did we begin our journey?
A.On Monday B.On Tuesday
C.On Saturday D.On Sunday

A.he had taken with him a camera to take some photos
B.we soon got on the ferry because there were not many people
C.he went to visit the Toronto Islands with his daughter only
D.summer is the best season to visit the Toronto Islands

Often people use laptops (筆記本電腦) on trains and airplanes,in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want.Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake,a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet.Besides, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home,in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities,is workable (可行的).As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. Also, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources.State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students.State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
