"My aunt will come down soon, Mr. Nuttel," said a young lady of fifteen.
Framton Nuttel attempted to say something to please the niece. Privately he doubted whether this visit would do much towards helping with his nerve problem.
"I know how it will be," his sister had said, "People there are nice. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there." Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction came into the nice division.
"Do you know many of the people round here?" asked the niece.
"Hardly a soul," said Framton.
"Then you know practically nothing about my aunt. Her great tragedy(悲?。?happened just three years ago," said the child, “Out through that window, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day's shooting. They never came back. Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back someday. She has often told me about Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing ‘Bertie, why do you bound?"'
At this time, Mrs. Sappleton came in, greeting, “I hope you don't mind the open window." She talked on cheerfully about the shooting. To Framton it was all purely horrible. He made a desperate but only partially successful effort to turn the talk on to a less scary topic. "The doctors agree in ordering me complete rest, and an absence of mental excitement." he announced, "On the matter of diet they are not so much in agreement," he continued.
"No?" said Mrs. Sappleton, in a voice which only replaced a yawn at the last moment. "Here they are at last!" she suddenly cried. In the deepening dusk out came three figures with a tired brown spaniel(獵犬). And then a young voice rang out of the dusk, "I said, Bertie, why do you bound?"
Framton grabbed wildly at his stick and hat, without a word of goodbye, and rushed out of sight.
“What is up?" Mrs. Sappleton was confused.
"I expect it was the spaniel," said the niece calmly, "He told me that he was once hunted into a tomb by a pack of dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug tomb with the creatures barking just above him. Enough to make anyone lose their nerve."
Romance at short notice was her specialty.

閱讀理解。閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion of climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “ matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

Most Americans get what money they have from their work; that is, they earn an income from wages or salaries. The richest Americans, however, get most of their money from what they own — their stocks, bonds, real estate, and other forms of property, or wealth. Although there are few accurate statistics to go by, wealth in American society appears to be concentrated in very few hands. More than 20 percent of everything that can be privately owned is held by less than one percent of the adult population and more than 75 percent of all wealth is owned by 20 percent of American adults. The plain fact is that most Americans have no wealth at all aside from their homes, automobiles, and a small amount of savings.
Income in the United States is not as highly concentrated as wealth. In 1917 the richest 10 percent of American families received 26.1 percent of all income, while the poorest 10 percent received 17 percent, mainly from Social Security and other government payments. The most striking aspect of income distribution is that it has not changed significantly since the end of World War II. Although economic growth has roughly doubled real disposable (可自由使用的) family income (the money left after taxes and adjusted for inflation) over the last generation, the size of the shares given to the rich and the poor is about the same. By any measure economic inequality is great in the United States.
The reality behind these statistics is that a large number of Americans are poor. In 1918, 14 percent of the population was living below the federal government’s poverty line, which at that time was an annual income of $ 9 287 for a nonfarm family of two adults and two children. In other words, about one out of seven Americans over 31 million people was officially considered unable to buy the basic necessities of food, clothes, and shelter. The suggested poverty line in 1981 would have been an income of about $11, 200 for a family of four. By this relative definition, about 20 percent of the population or more than 45 million Americans are poor.
11.What does the majority of the Americans have in terms of wealth?
A.Their income and savings.
B.Their house, cars and small amounts of savings.
C.Everything they own in their homes.
D.Actually, they have no wealth at all.
12.What is the percentage of wealth that is in the hands of most Americans?
A.Less than 25%. B.More than 25%.
C.More than 75%. D.Less than 20%.
13.Why is economic inequality still great in the US in spite of the economic growth?
A.Because the economic growth has widened the gap of the family income between the rich and the poor.
B.Because income in the US is still concentrated in the hands of the richest 10% of American families.
C.Because the proportion of income received by the rich and the poor remains almost the same as in 1917.
D.Because some Americans made great fortunes during the Second World War.
14.What can we learn from comparison of the two poverty lines in the last paragraph?
A. The poverty line of 1918 is more favorable to the poor than that of 1981.
B. The 1981 line didn’t leave much to the poor.
C. There were more Americans who were officially poor by the 1918 line.
D. There were more Americans who were officially poor by the 1981 line.
15.From the last two sentences we can see that 1981 government’s poverty line _______.
A.was of no good for the poor B.was officially approved
C.was not helpful to the poor D.was not put into operation then

閱讀理解。閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we’re hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.
One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there’s a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “three-year degree” model.
I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum (課程) any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out” one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist “diluting (稀釋)” the quality of the education they offer.
In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it’s not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (實(shí)習(xí)生) in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.
