Philadelphia (CNN)—Hazel Donnelly was taking her husband to the doctor when they got a call that their building was on fire.
Her first thought was about Kramer.“I don’t have children of my own,so my cat is like my child.I became very sad,” said Donnelly,50.“What if he didn’t make it?”
Once she arrived home,Donnelly asked firefighters (消防員) to get her cat,but they were busy trying to control the fire. Then Red Paw Emergency Relief Team arrived. The organization helps pets and their owners for free when disaster strikes.Jen Leary, who set up the group, helped find the animals once the fire was out.
“Everyone who received their pets started to cry,” said Donnelly.
No one was hurt, but the Donnellys’ building was badly damaged, and they weren’t sure where they were going to stay.Donnelly was excited to learn that Red Paw could provide free short-term care for Kramer, her 17-year-old cat.
“When someone loses everything in a fire, they shouldn’t then be forced to lose their pets—their family members—as well,” Leary said.“Letting them know,‘We’ll take care of your animal like it is our own’ means the world to people.”
After a big fire in 2011,Leary formed her organization.Since then,Leary and her group have provided help to nearly 1,000 animals and their families throughout southeastern Pennsylvania.Like the Red Cross, but for animals.
Red Paw cared for the Donnellys’ cat for more than three weeks.“I cried when we were reunited,” said Donnelly.“They went above and beyond the call of duty.I am so thankful.”
For Leary, helping families and their pets is what her work is all about.“My hope is that it’s a start, and they can move forward together,”she said.“After going through such a sad thing,it’s so good to have a happy ending.”

People’s faces light up when I say I taste chocolate for a living, but it’s not always delicious.I also have to taste chocolate that is not properly made and might have a bitter or burned flavor (味道).I’m usually in a small room, not allowed to talk, and parked in front of a computer to make my record.
I can taste as many as 30 chocolates per day,so to keep my sense of taste sharp,I force the sweets out. That’s another not-so-good part of the job, although it makes it impossible for me to put on weight.Between the chocolates,I wait 30 seconds to let my senses rest, and I eat half an unsalted biscuit and drink warm water.
I still eat chocolate just for pleasure, but not nearly as much.I actually love chocolate. The whole bottom part of my refrigerator is filled with chocolate from different parts of the world.I keep it in a plastic bag with a paper towel to keep it fresh. My favorite types are very high in cocoa (可可粉).But I don’t eat as much of it as I did before I started tasting chocolate as a job.
Many people don’t take enough time to appreciate the taste of even a small piece of chocolate.A key sign of high-quality chocolate is the first ingredient (成分) listed:cocoa. But if I give you a 100 percent cocoa chocolate bar, you’ll probably push it away because you’re not used to it.To train your sense of taste to enjoy better quality chocolate, try simple kinds. As a taster,I want others to do what I do:to look at food with interest and love and to notice colors, smells and flavors. Then you’ll know good quality.

The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial (帝王的) palace of the Ming and Oing dynasties. In the early 15th century,large-size construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420.In the following year, the capital of the Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing.Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911,but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the complex buildings were changed into a museum.Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public.
The Palace Museum is rectangular (長方形) in shape, about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall, encircled by a 52-meter-wide moat.In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Provinces, while in the Qing Dynasty,it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were mined from the suburban (郊外的) district of Fangshan and other districts.Construction of the Forbidden City brought huge hardship to the laboring people.
The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture (建筑) still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The palace has been expanded several times, but the original design was preserved. After liberation (解放),some costly renovations (翻新) were done and the Palace Museum is listed as one of the most important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese government.

In 1956 Brazil’s President wanted to move the capital city from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia. He chose a skilled and experienced Brazilian architect (建筑師) to build Brasilia. His name was Oscar Niemeyer.
Niemeyer was born in Rio de Janiero in 1907.He was a well respected architect by the time he was 30 years old.Niemeyer was a great artist. His designs were very different than other buildings at the time. Most other buildings had straight lines up and down.Niemeyer liked to build using half circles.
Niemeyer was very excited to design the main buildings of Brasilia. He designed a building called The Palace of the Dawn.It was a house for Brazil’s President. This building looks like it is floating (漂浮) above the ground. It has half circles around it.They are very light and beautiful.A lake around the palace reflects (映出) these shapes.
Niemeyer also designed the National Congress building. This government building has many parts. The biggest part is two tall towers that rise straight up into the air.On one side of this is a white building. It is shaped like a bowl that a person would eat out of.On the other side is a building in the opposite shape. These shapes are not the usual design of government buildings.
“If you go to see Brasilia, you may or may not like the buildings, but you could never say you had seen something similar before,” Niemeyer said.“It is important that the designer thinks of more than design. The architect’s role is to produce an architecture that serves everyone not just a group of important people,” he said.
Today,Niemeyer’s buildings do just this.Brasilia is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (聯(lián)合國教科文組織世界遺產(chǎn)).People from all over the world come to Brasilia to see Niemeyer’s buildings.Their beautiful design continues to inspire (啟示) people and will continue to do so for many years.
