In business, there's a speed difference:It's the difference between how important a firm's leaders say speed is to their competitive (競爭的) strategy(策略)and how fast the company actually moves. The difference is important regardless of industry and company size. Companies fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and money looking for ways to pick up the speed.
In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that chose to go, go, go to try to gain_an_edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track. What's more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up ”improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period.
How did they disobey the_laws_of_business_physics,_taking more time than competitors yet performing better? They thought differently about what “slower ” and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operational speed (moving quickly )and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value ). Simply increasing the speed of production, for example, may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference. But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services.
In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast (相比而言), performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, Stuck to tested methods, didn't develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes.
Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership. Teams that regularly take time to get things right, rather than plough ahead full bore, are more successful in meeting their business goals. That kind of strategy must come from the top.
1.What does the underlined part “gain an edge” in Paragraph 2 mean ?
A.Increase the speed. B.Get an advantage.
C.Reach the limit. D.Set a goal.
2.The underlined part “the laws of business physics” in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A.spending more time and performing worse
B.spending more time and performing better
C.spending less time and performing worse
D.spending less time and performing better
3. What can we learn from the text?
A.How fast a firm moves depends on how big it is.
B.How competitive a firm is depends on what it produces.
C.Firms guided by strategic speed take time to make necessary changes.
D.Firms guided by operational speed take time to develop necessary team spirit.
4.Which could be the best title for the text?
A.Improve quality? Serve better. B.Deliver value? Plough ahead.
C.Reduce time? Move faster. D.Need speed? Slow down.

Europe’s Mars orbiter (人造衛(wèi)星) has found water molecules (分子) vapourizing (蒸汽化) from the Red Planet’s south pole, scientists announced today, calling it the most direct evidence yet of water in the form of ice on the Martian surface.
A picture taken by Mars Express, January 15, 2004 from a height of 273 km shows a channel (Reull Vallis) once formed by flowing water east of the Hellas basin on Mars.
The search for water on Mars – which could be a sign of life – has greatly interested scientists for centuries. Mars watchers have long believed that the planet’s poles contain frozen water, but scientific findings in the past – including NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter’s evidence of large amounts of ice – were based more on inferences (推論), European Space Agency scientists said.
While Mars Odyssey has been able to indirectly show the presence of water at the pole using temperature monitors, the European camera has for the first time been able to map the polar cap using infrared technology that shows where water molecules are present, said scientist Jean-Pierre Bibring.
If Mars once had surface water, there were possibility for it to support life, although members of the European project have said that it remains too early to draw conclusions.
NASA’s Mars Odyssey, which has orbited the planet for two years, previously turned up evidence of lots of ice mixed with the soil, as little as 40 centimetres from the surface. \
James Garvin, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration program, told the Associated Press today that Mars Express had offered further confirmation of what scientists have long known: “Mars is a water planet.”
At a news conference earlier, he said the Express’s results were “not unexpected.”
“That’s wonderful results, it’s instant science, and I think scientists are going to want some time to think about what that means in the context of what we’re learning.”
As far back as 1940, scientists using telescopes saw vapours they believed indicated the presence of water. But in the 1960s the first Mars mission showed the planet to be frozen, dry and covered with craters (隕石坑) and deep ravines (溝壑).
1. Which of the following statements is TRUE according the the text?
A. Mars Express is also called the Red Planet.

A. used temperature monitors to detect water B. used infrared technology to detect water
C. set up cameras on Mars to take pictures D. used telescopes to detect water
3. James Garvin said the Express’ results were not unexpected because ______________.
A. as far back as 1940 scientists already found water on Mars
B. in the 1960s scientists found in the first Mars mission that Mars was a dry planet
C. it is well known to all that Mars is a water planet
D. scientists had got indirect evidence of the presence of water on Mars long before
4. Which of the following is the best title for this text?
A. Scientists Confirm Water on Mars
B. Europe’s Mars Orbiter
C. Mars Exploration
D. Unexpected Discovery

In his lowest days when few people bought his records, Taiwan singer Steve Chou (周傳雄) lived alone in Canada and did little. One day, he passed by a local CD store and accidentally heard a song that greatly enchanted (迷住) him. His passion for music was suddenly rekindled

Following the success of Turkey in Blue, he has recently released his latest work Lovers Genesis. In this album he explores human relationships in the Internet age.
The flag, the most common symbol of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark building, ships and other vehicles related to a country.
The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is , rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.
Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.
Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (圖騰)before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.
These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1008 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.
8. The best title for the passage would be_________________
A. Uses of Flags B. Power of the National Flag
C. Type of Flags D. Development of the National Flag
9. The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because_____________
A. they could tell wind direction
B. they could bring good luck to fighters
C. they were believed to stand for natural forces.
D. they were handed down by the ancestors
10. What does the author know of the first national flag?
A. He knows when it was sent to Europe.
B. He believes it was made in Egypt.
C. He doubts where it started
D. He thinks it came from China.
11. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. The second ancestor of the national flag.
B. The role of China in the spread of the national flag.
C. The use of modern flags in Europe.
D. The importance of modern flags.
